Internship Details

We are accepting interns on a rolling basis.

Our internship coordinator led Northwestern Mutual's Internship program (ranked top 10 in the US for over 20 years) and is developing and directing aspects of our internship program. He will lead our foundations seminar at the start of the internship and routinely meet with interns to maximize their time at SFC as well as their personal and professional development.

The internship consists mainly of supporting ongoing core business department work.

Each intern must also develop a unique research project in collaboration with their department head that they will research and develop every week.

Interns will take part in weekly leadership development sessions where they learn about core leadership principles that they can apply directly in their day-to-day work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of major are you looking for?

Our leadership team have come from various backgrounds and majors, and many of their jobs have little to do with what they studied. At SFC, we care more about the quality of the person and their initiative, rather than purely their major or area of study. We are confident this experience will be formational and career advancing for various majors, as it melds social entrepreneurship and leadership development with the practical application of best practices and very hard work.

Who is eligible to apply?

We are looking for eager learners from all-backgrounds. We have had interns who are current or past college and university students, recent graduates, and more.

What would I do during my internship?

Each internship will look different, based on the type of internship. A majority of the internship time will go towards supporting ongoing SFC activities. If you are an agricultural greenhouse intern, you will spend your time in a greenhouse. If you are an admin intern, you may spend your time supporting inventory management and digitizing various trackers and receipts. If you are an HR intern, you may support attendance keeping, employee engagement, and monitoring the staff learning schedule. In short, you will work hard and learn a lot!

In regard to the personal initiative championed by the intern, there are limitless possibilities. An engineer may help research rainwater catchment systems or propose a cheap bio-gas system, a biologist may run growth trials testing fish feed and water ph, an economist may research and pilot new initiatives in our local vegetable buying and selling program, and an education major may design a digital literacy curriculum for our staff.

We are looking for individuals that can find links between their passions and skills and the mission of Small Farm Cities, and are eager to listen to proposals on ideas for individual initiatives that each intern will champion.

Is this is paid internship?

Yes, we pay interns MWK 60,000 per month, and are currently building intern houses that we will provide to interns so that they will have a place to stay with other interns on site.

Where would I stay during my internship?

We are currently building intern houses that we will provide to interns so that they will have a place to stay with other interns on site. Until the houses are completed, interns are expected to sort out their own housing. If selected, you can ask the hiring team for contacts that may help in sorting out housing.

What are the hours of the internship?

Interns work Monday-Friday from 7am to 5pm, and half day Saturday.
